You’ve got engaged – congratulations! Now comes the process of planning your perfect wedding day. Researching wedding ideas can be great fun, but it’s not always easy. There are so many places to look and you’ll need to balance what you want with what you can afford, while trying to keep your parents and future in-laws happy!
The good news is there are several websites to give you with inspiration for your big day. I’ve pulled together some resources to help you with planning your ideal wedding. There are also a few ideas that couples who’ve booked me to perform magic at their weddings have provided.
Wedding Ideas for The Traditionalist
If you’re planning a more traditional day, there are a bunch of websites to help with generating ideas. Here are some of the most popular ones.
The sister website of the Condé Nast’s best-selling bridal magazine, Brides.com is packed with ideas for wedding dresses, decor, entertainment, flowers, and everything else you’ll need for a brilliant wedding day.
There are also lots of interesting articles on the history of traditions such as why it’s bad luck to see the bride before the wedding and the origins of the garter toss. Happy reading!
Another good one-stop-shop for wedding inspiration is Hitched.co.uk. They have a great section where you can browse cakes, decoration, invites and decor by colour scheme, and wedding ideas by category. Whether you’re planning a vintage ceremony, glitz and glamour, or something more traditional, you’ll find many ideas and inspiration.
Confetti.co.uk is full to the brim with options from the hen party, the wedding day itself, right through to the honeymoon.
At the time of writing there’s a competition running to win your dream £40,000 wedding. Good luck!
There are several apps around on the market to help plan your wedding day. These can also serve as places for inspiration, and put you in touch with useful suppliers. A couple of popular ones are Bridebook and WeddingHappy.
An alternative wedding day
Want a less traditional wedding? You will find some ideas on the websites already mentioned, and here are a few more specialist sites to tickle your fancy.
Rock and Roll Bride
Rock and Roll bride bills itself as “The Official Guide For Rock and Roll Brides” and it does exactly what it says on the tin. There is some great off-the-wall inspiration, although the site can be a little hard to navigate and find what you want. As well as the website, they have a monthly print magazine available for subscription.
Offbeat Bride is based in the USA, so the supplier and venue information may not be so useful, but it is a great place for wedding ideas! There’s a really useful comprehensive planning guide for alternative minded couples who’ve just got engaged. I love the site’s tagline “Engaged and Confused”
the best of the rest for wedding ideas
One Fab Day
Irish-based One Fab Day also has UK and International versions depending on where you’re based. It’s easy to navigate through sections on dresses, themes, cakes and flowers. True to their origins, they have some great articles on Irish-themed weddings.
Rock My Wedding
Pin the dress on the bride
Pinterest is not only a great resource for inspiration, you can also use it as a place to store all of your own wedding ideas.
You can create separate boards for different parts of the day (Wedding invites, wedding decor and wedding dresses for instance). Have friends or relatives who are over-eager to share their ideas? Invite them to pin stuff to your boards too!
An obvious place to start is to run some searches around wedding inspiration and wedding ideas. But don’t just search there. Consider themes you want to incorporate into your day, or interests that might bring up ideas you hadn’t thought of.
You could spend many hours looking at ideas for your wedding on Instagram. Pick a hashtag and start scrolling – popular #wedding hashtags include #weddingdress #bridalstyle #weddingday #weddinginspiration #weddinginspo #weddingstyle and #weddingideas.
You can also try more specific hashtags like #luxurywedding #bohobride or #hippiewedding depending on your preferred flavour!
Don’t forget the Entertainment
That should be enough to give you plenty of interesting ideas to make your wedding day exactly as you want it. I couldn’t possibly finish up without a small little plug myself though!
Weddings can be a long day for guests, especially if there are people coming who don’t know each other. I’ll entertain your guests during these times and make sure it’s as special and memorable for them as it is for you. This could be while you’re having photos taken, between courses at the wedding breakfast, or over early evening drinks before everyone hits the dancefloor. It’s a brilliant way to break the ice and get everybody talking, and avoid any “lulls” during the day.
