Your big day’s approaching. You’ve booked the venue and sorted the catering, flowers and DJ. How about something special for your day guests to make the day extra memorable? A wedding magician is a great way to keep your guests entertained during the quieter parts of the day while they’re waiting for food or you’re busy having photos taken.
I’ve performed as as wedding magician both in UK and internationally for a number of years, so here are a few tips to get the most out having magic on your wedding day.
When to have a magician at your wedding
There are various times during your wedding day that magic can work well. I ca entertain around 100 guests over a couple of hours doing close-up magic over drinks or during the meal. Typically couples book me to perform magic at weddings during the following times of the day:
During the photos
You’ve both said “I do” and the photographer’s taken you off to get the all important pictures to capture your special memories. During this time, your guests will probably be milling around waiting to eat. Perhaps you have guests who don’t know each other well, or some younger guests who need something to keep them occupied. This is a great part of the day to hire a magician to perform for small groups before the meal.
Table magic during the wedding breakfast
Once everyone’s seated, and especially if there are a lot of people to be fed, there can be delays while the catering team serve each table, or you’re waiting for others to finish eating. Close-up magic during the meal is an excellent way to provide entertainment while guests are waiting for the next course or for the speeches to start.
I’ll work the room and do a short performance at each table, with something extra special for the bride and groom.
Early evening drinks reception
The meal’s over, and your guests have started to head to the bar. Some evening functions start a little slowly, particularly if you have guests who don’t know each other so well.
Once again, I will mingle with the room performing magic for small groups at a time. Close-up magic is a great way to get people excited and talking to each other before the dancing starts. While my magic is aimed at adults, it is suitable for all ages. So, if you’ve got some kids who need occupying at this time I’ve got you covered!
How to choose a wedding magician
There are a number of things to consider here. Cost will clearly be one, and magicians will charge a range of fees depending on their experience, demand, and other factors.
You’ll also want to consider if they are someone who you want as a special guest on your wedding day. Make sure you can watch some videos of them in action, check if they have any client testimonials, and speak to them on the phone or in person to discuss what they can do and what you’re expecting.
